Preparing for your First Consultation

The objective of our office, located at Alameda Maracatins, 426 set 311, is to make your visit as pleasant and reliable as possible.

Please, if you have not already done so, contact our office to schedule your first appointment. The phone and Whatsapp is: +55 11 35964269.

If your appointment is via telemedicine, we make the following recommendations:

– Confirm receipt of instructions on how to access the virtual environment to carry out the telemedicine consultation.

– Stay in a private, well-lit and quiet place where others cannot hear you.

– Check your device’s battery as well as your internet connection in advance.

– If you have difficulties accessing the virtual room, just let us know by phone or Whatsapp.

Regardless of whether your appointment is in person or via telemedicine, please bring the following information to your first appointment:

1) Your main complaints. For this we recommend the mirror test. Stand in front of a mirror in a brightly lit room and really look at yourself for 10-15 minutes. What do you see that you like? What do you see that you don’t like? What would you change if you could? Now write it down and bring it with you to your initial appointment.

2) If your complaint involves something related to aging, bring a photo of yourself from when you were younger showing the area you want to improve.

3) A list of the medications you use, including:

a) The Medications in current use and their dosages,

b) food suplements,

c) vitamins,

d) natural medications,

e) homeopathy;

4) Information from your medical history, including:

The. previous surgeries (type of surgery and time when performed),

B. chronic conditions,

C. allergies (to drugs, products, foods, among others)

D. family illnesses: parents, grandparents, siblings, and first cousins (history of chronic illness, surgery, and/or causes of death)

E. Obstetric history, if female (number of pregnancies, types of delivery, etc.)

5) Habits that affect health;

6) Exams that you may have performed recently;

7) Medical reports from other colleagues if they have indicated an evaluation with a plastic surgeon. If you have a skin lesion suspected by another specialist, bring, if possible, a photo of the lesion highlighted with a pen;

8) Particular needs based on your values and principles that may influence the type of treatment offered;

9) Questions and doubts you have about the treatment you want to perform.

10) Specific questions you may have regarding the hospitals where we have a record.

What to expect from your consultation.

We will work with you to design an individualized treatment plan that can meet your goals and needs. We encourage you to ask as many questions as necessary to help you better understand the options available, your goals and limitations. There is no set time for your first appointment, but they usually last between 1:30 and 2 hours.

We will initiate the consultation by interviewing your medical history. Next, we will assess your goals, needs and values. Treatment options including type of anesthesia, risks, benefits and limitations of surgery will be discussed. It will also be clarified how the eventuality of a complication can be treated. We use the principles of evidence-based medicine in the conduct of our treatments. The information that will be provided to you will be based on the best available scientific evidence ever published. We will decide, together, the best treatment option in your specific case.

You will be explained in detail how to prepare for the procedure and how recovery after the procedure occurs, including the type of dressings used, activity restrictions, and expected recovery time to return to your usual routine.

Telemedicine consultations do not allow for a clinical examination. Therefore, there will be a need for an in-person consultation (free of charge after the telemedicine consultation) before the surgery is performed so that a clinical examination can be performed.

During the consultation, feel free to ask questions such as:

– Am I a good candidate for the procedure I am interested in? If not, why not?

– What is your level of training to perform this surgical procedure?

– How many surgeries like this has the doctor performed?

– Has the doctor ever had complications with this type of procedure?

– How are complications treated?

– What is the satisfaction level of the patients for this surgery?

– Who performs the anesthesia and what are their qualifications?

Don’t be afraid to ask any kind of question. Feel free to come with a trusted family member or friend to actively participate in your consultation.

Laboratory tests and specific tests will be requested. Preoperative exams are valid for 6 months. The available hospital options will also be discussed in order to choose the hospital that is most convenient for you.

At the end of the consultation, you will be provided with a quote for your procedure and payment methods (contact our office about the consultation fee and payment methods).

Don’t be concerned about the volume of information that will be given to you during the consultation. You will receive, after the consultation, all the detailed information about your procedure in writing.

Appointment cancellation/delay

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment or if you experience any delay.

Other Considerations

· Plastic surgery abroad is often labelled as a holiday package. This is very misleading and creates the wrong impression. Firstly, plastic surgery is a serious and major undertaking and should not be considered as a “holiday”. Planning to have a holiday after your surgery is unwise since it is unlikely that you will be able to carry out regular holiday activities.

· To properly heal and reduce the risk of complications, you shouldn’t sunbathe, drink alcohol, swim or do any water sports. Lifting heavy bags and standing or walking for long periods of time are other vacation-related activities you may need to avoid. After most surgery you would be advised to rest and just take gentle light exercise until your wound has healed and stitches have been removed. If you are keen to see the place you are travelling to, you should take the holiday before you have the operation and plan several days of rest afterwards.

· The team of Dr. Juan can help inform you if you will need a visa to enter and stay in the country.

· If necessary, Dr Juan Montano’s team will be able to recommend hotels close to his office for your preoperative and postoperative accommodation.

· Here is a list of hotels near our clinic, which could be good options to accommodate a patient who will undergo surgery:
Mercure São Paulo Moema Hotel: Lavandisca Street, 365 – Moema. Phone: +55 (11) 5054-6600
The Time Othon Suites Hotel: Jamaris Avenue, 100 – Moema. Phone: +55 (11) 2197-7300
Ibis São Paulo Congonhas Hotel: Baronesa de Bela Vista Street, 801 – Vila Congonhas. Phone: +55 (11) 5097-3737
Tryp São Paulo Jesuíno Arruda Hotel: Jesuíno Arruda Street, 806 – Itaim Bibi. Phone: +55 (11) 3704-4400
Quality Suites Oscar Freire: Consolação Street, 3555 – Jardim Paulista. Phone: +55 (11) 2122-4040
All of these hotels have good reviews and offer quality services to their guests. It is always important to check cancellation and refund policies directly with the hotels before making a reservation. Remember that phone numbers may change over time, so it is also important to verify that the information is up to date before contacting the hotels.

· While you can have multiple telemedicine appointments with dr. Juan Montano before surgery, it is recommended to have a face-to-face consultation with Dr Juan Montano at least 2 days before your surgery date.

· The first two to three weeks after surgery tend to be the most important. It would be interesting if you could spend this period in face-to-face monitoring by Dr Juan before returning to your country of origin.

· If necessary, Dr Juan’s team can help you define a professional who will take you to your hotel after you leave the hospital.

· Depending on the type of surgery, you may need assistance after the surgery. Patients usually need help dressing, eating, and taking care of other personal needs for the first 7 to 14 days. If necessary, Dr Juan Montano will be able to refer you to nursing professionals who will be able to give you all the necessary assistance.

· Air travel and major surgery increase your risk of a blood clot, which can be life threatening. It’s recommended you do not fly for 7 to 10 days after plastic surgery procedures. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol, use of antithrombosis stockings and walking about during your flight can help the circulation.

· Once the weekly face-to-face consultations in the first two to three postoperative weeks are completed, Dr. Juan Montano will provide all necessary aftercare through telemedicine follow-up after your return to your home country. If a complication arises, Dr. Juan will be available to talk to you and decide the best way to solve the challenge through telemedicine.

· Although it is rare for a patient to present a complication that requires a surgical procedure after returning to his/her country of origin, it would be interesting to have a back-up surgeon to perform it in your place of origin or you can return with Dr Juan who will attend without charge, although additional hospital costs are paid by the patient. Dr Juan Montano will always be available to provide all the necessary information for a better solution of the case.
